Issue No 101

Well that wasn’t so hard. 100 issues under a grand total of two editors must be some sort of record, but there’s no hangover and J “Lazarus” B and his trusty team have put together another cracker. And as well there’s a Jye Byrnes V-Wizard up for grabs for all Oz subscribers.

CHILLIS, CACTI & SUFFOCATING HUGS

Why would you want to leave idyllic Evans Head? Well, in photographer Emy Dossett’s case it’s when Sayulita Mexico beckons, and that’s definitely fine with us. After 13 years of intermittent travel, often to South America but never Mexico, Emy finally did it and it was all she’d hoped for, and more. She’s now making ends meet there “shooting for surf retreats and brands, specialising in underwater portraits and longboarding, and mostly floating around the ocean with a big fat smile”. Check it out for a taste of what’s making her so happy.

BADDY BY GOODY

No, not a remake of "High Noon" or say “Stars Wars” for the OK Boomer crew but the unique insights of influential surfer/shaper Ian Goodacre into the early days of his great mate David “Baddy” Treloar. And the title’s just another example of the creative genius that is the PLB ed. Plus some great shots from back in the day including Angourie for sure.

BRILLIANT CORNERS

You probably know Sam Bleakley as the anchor of the WSL live longboard coverage or as the author of a number of popular surf travel books but he’s now made the acclaimed Brilliant Corners documentary series available on the WSL website. Lucy Small interviewed Sam about the series that tells tales “of resilience, joy and surf stoke in places we might otherwise never have thought to look”. One of the great surf travel adventurers, Sam’s travels have taken him from PNG to West Africa and plenty in between. Inspiring!

STOPS ON HIGHWAY 1

Pictorial from Oz East Coast . . . we love a sunburnt country. It's Pacific Longboarder right? And while we frequently take liberties with the brief, this is the genuine article. Eight pages of the best the East Coast offered this year with Skippy, seaweed and some Kookaburras too.

INTO THE GREAT UNKNOWN

Lucy Small checks out the WSL longboard tour events in New York and Spain with an interesting Joel Tudor appearance in NY and some decent surf conditions in Spain. Not your typical WSL contest report as Lucy looks behind and around the scenes and offers some Lucyish perspectives on what went down.

+

Seriously, we even reckon our ads are worth the cover price – beautiful people, travel, and surfboards that have never looked so good. Some of our advertisers have been with us forever, others are pretty new, and we’re pleased to report that all are straight-up, surf loving outfits - the real deal.
