When Matt Shay went out on his own with his Palehorse label he decided to name it after a favourite painting his greatgrandmother had done of a wild horse. “The painting is still in the family, and it’s rad! The horse is running from a burning haystack and right from when I was a little kid the strength and the chaos she captured has always fascinated me. So the name just popped up. And I guess building surfboards can be pretty chaotic at times with all its ups and downs haha.”
Matt started shaping when he was still in high school and basically grew up in the board factories around Torquay. “There was one point where I felt like I was sanding for everyone in town!”
In 2014 he went full time with Palehorse from his factory in Ocean Grove, and builds all his boards from start to finish himself. “I make mostly customs, everything from twinnies to bonzers to longboards, and lately a lot of guns”.
He surfs them all too and has a major rep on the Surf Coast.
“The Mustang is an involvement era modern longboard,” say Matt. “It’s fast and turns smooth off the tail, and balanced through the mid section for trim speed, and moving forward you feel total control which allows for critical hang fives and tens. I personally prefer the Mustang at 9’4” x 23” x 3”, but it goes great from 9’ to 10’.”
Complete with Poseiden’s trident art flourishes, some Aussie PLB subscriber is going to own this Victorian bred Mustang by next issue.
