Carabine Surfboards have been building all sorts of beautiful, innovative boards out of Wollongong since the 1960s, and we’re rapt to have had them step up half a dozen times over the past 10 years or so with one of their top-end longboards for the PLB subscriber promo. Every time it’s been brilliant, and here we go again!

The Shakey and The Piglet are their two most popular modern log models, and when chatting to Carabine’s owner Shane Hornby, again, we just couldn’t decide between the two. So for this issue, once more we’re letting the winner decide, with Shane adding. “If they’d prefer though they can go with a custom design, we’ll make whatever they like!” (He’s good like that.) 

So here’s the pick:

From 9’0” to 9’10”, The Shakey is a modern well-balanced single-fin shaped by Terry Bishop who’s been with Carabine since 1969. Wide point in the centre, 50/50 rails with subtle nose concave to a soft roll in the middle to a rolled vee out the tail. The rocker is quite flat up front and a generous kick in the tail gives control on the tip and it’s easy to turn when you need it - classic lines, hard arcs and easy noserides.”

The Piglet model was designed by teamrider Aidan Cashin and shaped by Terry. With that rounded pin it has a “less-of-a-pig” plan-shape which allows turns from further up the board, and it’s a great noserider - a user-friendly board all round.
