Florida’s laid-back cat Justin Quintal has made it eight Duct Tape wins out of 17 total events (some of which he didn’t attend) to absolutely stomp his authority on the men’s division of Joel Tudor’s travelling way-hip roadshow.
The male invitees for Hainan included style heavies like Californians Alex Knost, Andy Nieblas, Jared Mell, Tyler Warren and Aussies Harrison Roach, Tom Payne, and Myles Doughman.
This event at Riyue Bay on Hainan Island was the first time that Women’s and Men’s divisions have run together at a Duct Tape (and only the second time there’s been a stand-alone Women’s division), with the Women’s taken out by first-time Duct Tape invitee Chloe Calmon. The Brazillian has been rated in the very top few on the WSL Longboard “Tour” for several years now, where she often smooths her style out on a single-fin.
And hey if this report looks sketchy on detail that’s because it is. We can’t tell you who finished where in either division because, as with most Duct Tapes, it’s really hard to get a news release or any hard info post-event – and we’ve had a pretty good trawl of websites and the social swamp.
Sydney gun Tom Payne is giving Justin a champagne spray in the podium photo and he finished second in the Men’s in just his second Duct Tape (go Tom!), but beyond that, for now we’re stumped.
Hopefully we can post some further news here in the next few days from someone who knows what happened, and Vans have promised a vid of the event “sometime in the next few weeks”.
However you look at it though – Quintal is King!
