Tom Wegener was waiting for the right day to launch the new mini-toothpick. The board, made for Hunter Williams, was inspired by the late Bill Wallace, who taught Tom the dynamics of making toothpicks. Tom was keen to share this knowledge with 10-year-old Hunter, a budding Noosa shaper.
Filmmaker Samuel Fairbank was on speed dial as they waited for all the conditions to come together. It was worth the wait. A small window opened just after midday on an inconspicuous weekday and they had their chance, without the usual crowd.
Tom says, “On small days like this you can see that Noosa has the perfect sandbank for the toothpick to find its trim and keep going on a nice clean swell. This small wave is what we are after.”
In Once Upon a Toothpick, Tom, Hunter and friends experience surfing the iconic Australian toothpick on a magic day in Noosa. You can see and feel the stoke.
“It shows how incredible the toothpick is as a surfboard. With down the line speed and control it offers perfect trim on a wave. Skip Frye says perfect trim is the ultimate surfing experience, and I have to agree,” Tom says.
