Then and Now – a seven-minute video tribute to George Rice and his classic boards

(First ran here in Jan. 2019) Torquay surfer Glen Hunwick is a Surfcoast Longboard Club competitor, a committee member of the Bells Beach Surf Film Festival, and one of countless fans of renowned Victorian and Australian pioneering board manufacturer George Rice:

“A few weeks ago with the generous help of Bob Smith, I shot and edited a seven-minute film to honour George Rice and to show it along with a Q&A with the great man himself at our Bells Beach Surf Film Festival.

“The concept involved having three hot young longboarders – Ben Considine, Sam Suendermann and Billy Whitton - ride a few of Bob’s collectible mid 1960s Rice boards.

“I’m now hoping our vid can give the broader surfing community some idea of the significant influence George and his surfboard company had through the 60s and 70s - not to mention all the shapers and surfers he mentored, including guys like Pat Morgan, Fred Pyke, Rod Brooks, Doug ‘Claw’ Warbrick, etc. etc.

“Given there was no budget and little time to make the film, I called in quite a few favours and received an amazing response - particularly from George who was very emotional on the night!”
