Come old and come young, come out to Sumner and have some fun.
We'll slide and glide the weekend away, you'll love it so much you might want to stay.
Single fin logs will be boards that are ridden, and for style and nose riding points shall be given.
Do not worry if you’re not one to compete, just come along and watch a few heats.
This contest, you see, shall be quite the social affair, a bunch of surfers hanging out and drinking some beer.
The Single Fin Mingle is an annual multi-faceted festival that celebrates traditional longboarding and the joyous culture that surrounds it. Through our prestigious competition, Film Gala, Art Shows and Musical Soirees, The Mingle is a way of building human connection through having a marvellous time.
The Mingle was founded in 2015 by local Sumner surfer Ambrose McNeill. For years, New Zealand had always had a thriving longboard tour Ambrose and a crew of Sumner surfers had been hitch hiking around each year.
These contests provided the perfect excuse to travel, surf, party and best of all the opportunity of making new friends up and down the country. When the tour died, it left a bunch of longboarders starving for the chance to reunite and enjoy the culture of longboarding.
Ambrose says, “One day when I was having a coffee with mum, she told me she was going to start a ukulele club, I declared I was starting a Longboard comp. Through years of perfecting the Sumner weekend with friends, I knew first hand that Sumner had everything we needed for a great time- surf, restaurants, cafes, pubs, gallery’s, movies and a town full of legends… so from there it was just about putting the pieces of the festive puzzle together.”
Ambrose’s mums ukulele club didn’t eventuate but in 2015 the inaugural Single Fin Mingle went off with a roar of great times and it’s been rolling ever since. and in 2020 will celebrate its 6th year and will attract over 100 longboarders.
