The southern end of Sydney’s Southside is one of world’s great surfing areas and has been home to two hardcore boardriding clubs since forever. Over recent years local ripper and longboard stylist Matty Cook has cooked up a get-together with more rivalry than the local league clash between the Cronulla Sharks and the Saint George Illawarra Dragons at Endeavour Field.
And it’s ready to roll again for the third time - here’s what Cronulla legend Steve Core had to say about it:
The Peter Townend Battle of the Reefs:
The hometown derby between two fiercely loyal Cronulla Peninsula board-riding clubs is set to go down on Saturday 15th September.
Club pride and bragging rights are up for grabs when the 3rd annual 'Battle of the Reefs' clash between the Cronulla Point Boardriders and Sandshoes Boardriders takes place.
Sandshoes Boardriders are honouring their life-time patron and former '76 World Surfing Champion and ex-Cronulla resident Peter Townend by featuring him on this year's collectable T-shirt edition.
I'm stoked, and honoured to say that they have chosen my black 'n' white image of PT from Cronulla Point in 1974 to feature on the back of the limited print run of t-shirts.
Both sides are hoping to include some female riders as part of their teams. If you are in or around Cronulla on the day, make sure you swing by and check the action out.
In the two closely fought battles of previous years, Sandshoes have walked away with the spoils of victory. The Point boys & girls will be looking to level up the ledger this year.
We are mostly black, white & blue here in The Shire, but I wish the best of luck to both teams and I hope to see you all at the Watergrill Restaurant afterwards for a drink and a bite to eat in celebration of a bullish day's surfing competition.
