This segment lifted from the Dale Davis movie Strictly Hot is only a minute and a half long and was shot more than a year before Midget won his world title at Manly in 1964.
He’d recently made a statement by becoming the first non-Hawaiian or American to win the Makaha International (which started in December 1962 and finished in January 63) which was considered the unofficial world title at the time.
He was 18 and riding a balsa board he’d shaped himself at the Keyo factory in Brookvale. And it looks to be that same board in this footage.
This short edit was among the first film pieces to introduce young Midget Farrelly’s talents to US audiences. He was 19 when he won the world title so presumably he was still 18 here.
Geez he was good already eh! Loose.
The film’s promo for this segment reads: “Strictly Hot” with Midget Farrelly - from Pipeline to Sunset Beach, Rincon and Malibu. The Dale Davis classic from the early 1960s.”
