The 35th annual Logger Heads Malibu Classic has received its largest number of entries, in record time, which shows the popularity of this long running event! 194 positions have been filled, both male & female competitors, with an age spread from 11 years to 75 years! Surfers from near & far are coming to Scotts Head to enjoy 3 days of longboard riding, along with experiencing the fabled Logger Heads formula for having fun!
Many family entries have been received, they will be contending for the privilege of having their family name written up on the Family Achievement Honour board, along with surfing in their relative divisions. Of which there are 15, starting with u/18 Junior Ladies & Men, through to o/ 70’s Men’s & o/40’s Ladies.
Scotts Head can offer surfers a long sand bottom point ride, which on its day can seem endless! Well protected from the winter southerly winds, conditions can last all day, giving competitors ample time to show their skills on the longboards. All competitors will be riding 9 foot plus longboards, including the Old Malibu division, where surfers will be riding original pre 1965 longboards. These boards are much heavier than the modern day longboards, which dictates the style of manoeuvres competitors can master. The modern day equivalent being the “Log” division, where boards have only one fin, 50 / 50 rails (which are the edges of the boards) & judges award “old school” smooth manoeuvres.
Many past winners will be returning to defend their titles including:
Jack Norton from Newcastle, last year’s winner of the Shamill Livestock - Open Logs & Air Vids - Old Mal divisions; Tia Deighton from Arrawarra, in the FX Wax - Open Ladies; Marlin Guihot from Newcastle, in the Burford Blanks - Open 9’; Danny Bond from Arrawarra, in the Eungai Rail Store - o/70’s; Mandy Penhall from Evans Head, in the Catalyst Surfboards - o/40’s Ladies; & Charlie O’Sullivan from Woolgoolga, in the Reece Plumbing - o/50’s.
Local surfers to watch are Mark Fuller & Geoff Woodhouse defending their titles in the Club Scotts – o/55’s & Bennett Surfboards o/65’s respectively. Manda Godfrey in the o/40’s Ladies & her daughter Rylee in the Surf ‘N Raks – Junior Ladies; along with Joel Parkhouse & Troy Martin in the Ocean & Earth – o/35’s.
Scotts Head offer spectators great vantage spots to watch the surfing displays & all are welcome to attend the social gatherings at Club Scotts especially on Saturday night when the band fires up & everyone starts showing their fine foot work!
The event also raises funds for charity donations, tickets to win a 8’ Catalyst Surfboard are also available at Club Scotts leading up to the event, just enquire at bar & good luck!
