“The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” – by Eric Bogle

24 April 23

Heavy content warning, but April 25 is Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand - a time to rmember and to give thanks. This song is revered Down Under, and it's surely one of the most powerful ever written on the futility of war. It’s been covered by dozens of bands and artists but this version is from the bloke who wrote it. For our overseas readers re. the significance of April 25, it marks the day in World War I (the war to end all wars) when our troops staged an amphibious landing on Turkey’s Gallipoli peninsula. The following eight months saw approx. 250,000 casualties on each side. Anzac day is a public holiday in Oz and NZ “to commemorate those who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peace keeping operations.” Lest we forget.
