20 February 19

Around eighty competitors entered this old log event and took their chances on the two sets of replica mid 1960s Quane boards which are used from one heat to the next.

Held over the weekend 8 – 9th February, the swell was a consistent two feet with an onshore breeze not affecting the enthusiasm or the skill of the competitors which included a strong women’s section. The contest committee of Steve Sands, Dobbie and Johnny ‘The Hoff’ Daverne put together a huge sponsorship list which included the usual amazing raffle with around seventy prizes. The competition was held in the wonderful venue out front of North Wai Boardriders Clubrooms.

The variation in the rules of allowing a leg rope for any competitor over fifty five years of age shows that flexibility is creeping under the door as the age of the competitors gradually sneaks up. Around eighty competitors entered this old log event and took their chances on the two sets of replica mid 1960s Quane boards which are used from one heat to the next.  Breakfast of bacon and eggs was served up each morning offered up with fine coffee from North Wai’s own baristas The beer, wine and food flowed out of the kitchen almost non- stop – crumbed fish bites, paua, barbecued sirloin steaks, marinated chicken plus salads galore and fresh fruit platters kept the spectators and competitors well fed for the two days.

Past and current members travelled from Canada and Australia to be there!

The eventual men’s winner was Seb Johnson, from Hugh Ritchie, Nick Black and Henry Hawke.

Women’s saw Tash Mattingly-Civil take it from Donna Henderson, Brittany Andrews and Mikayla Dyer.

Al Temoananui  won the ‘One wave event’ after paper/Scissors/rock was used with Seb Johnson to split the tie.

The Teams Event was won by New Brighton Longboarders: Ron Carter, Yutaka, Mike Pimm and Paul Bennett.

Congratulations and thanks to all those who worked so hard to organise and run this great contest and get together.
