Surf Collective is a platform for 70 independent producers of Australian surf gear of all sorts, and in keeping with their ambition of giving small businesses a voice they run a programme with the Year 10/11 Business Students at their local Barrenjoey High School in Avalon Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
This is their third year, and the idea is to get the kids engaged in their studies by getting them to come up with a surf related business and then use this to gain knowledge in business.
Surf Collective also spends some time in the classroom giving them some ideas about branding and what would make a product work and generally giving them a helping hand. The teachers have noticed a marked improvement in the kids’ engagement with the subject due to this program.
At the end of the year they put on a Shark Tank night where parents and students come along. Two Directors of Surf Collective as well as James from their Café Collab, The Sneaky Grind Café in Avalon act as the Sharks, and the kids give their pitches and answer a bunch of questions.
The quality of the business ideas and plans were fantastic this year which made it very hard to pick a winner. So this year the prize money of $1,000 to help them set up their business has been split between two businesses being an environmentally friendly Jewellery brand called Water Salt, and an Ocean Inspired Environmentally friendly Beeswax Food Wrap business called Lovedbybeez.

Both of the brands from Shark Tank will soon be up on their site, and also in their Collab with The Sneaky Grind Café in Avalon.
It’s refreshing to see an Aussie retailer not only promoting independent Australian brands, but also working at the grassroots to encourage the next generation to start their own surf related business. Who knows what great future business they may uncover!
