From Wild Things, Byron Bay: We're back! SURF CLUB has been on hiatus for a couple of years now, due to pandemic lockdowns and natural disasters but we are finally back! There's a fresh calendar of events in the pipeline, starting SATURDAY DECEMBER 3!
Follow the new facebook page and/or instagram (@surfclub_byron) to stay up to date!
What is Surf Club?
SURF CLUB is an inclusive social surfing competition held monthly (during the Northern NSW surf season) and based in the Byron area. We host 6 regular local club meets, and will plan for one major event per year (with prize money and international competitors) as well as one 'away' weekend event per year.
There is a focus on single fin longboarding and the judging criteria rewards surfers with speed, power and flow - however the main aim of the day is having fun. Mens and womens heats alternate throughout the day for equal opportunity in terms of surf conditions (and supporters on the beach!)
We are stoked to have received approval from Byron Council to use Belongil Beach as official home for Surf Club! This allows us to use the stretch of beach from signals all the way to elements for the meetings on specified dates throughout the year.
In the process of gaining council approval we have also registered with surfing NSW which gives us insurance as a club and it also offers each member the opportunity to purchase personal insurance that covers you for the year wherever/whenever you surf.
This part is totally optional, but a good idea. If you want more info on this check it out on this link - Let us know if you’d like to go ahead with this and if so we can get you a discount code.
Below is a calendar of the surf club dates for this year, we will hopefully also include a weekend away, date TBC.
December 3 - This will be a kind of wrap up event that we never had for 2020, BBQ, music and christmas drinks at Wild Things after the event!
Competitors/attendees for the next event will need to let us know by December 2 so we can prepare the heat draws (and order enough food). We also need volunteers to help so please get in contact if you're keen to lend a hand!
* 6 club events per year
* We are also aiming for 1 event as an away event, Camping - mobile competition.
* $70 membership gets you entry into all comps and a Surf Club tee as well as access to all wild things demo boards and a 10% discount year round at Wild Things and Postcard for all Surf Club members.
* Membership fee goes towards running costs like the Surfing NSW registration, post-event BBQs, the annual party after main event, comp rashies, and so on.
* Event will be based at Belongil – but mobile condition dependent
* Away event TBA
* 1 x major annual event, international competitors invited. TBA
Judging based on critical Surfing - a variety of manoeuvers combined, both classic and progressive performed in the critical section of the wave with speed, power and flow.
"Critical" – performed in the power source of the wave
"Classic" - manoeuvers that give a nod to traditional Australian surfing
"Progressive" – manoeuvers that push the boundaries of modern longboarding
"Speed" – maintaining momentum
"Power" – Explosive while staying in control of your board and maintaining momentum
"Flow" – linking manoeuvers with style
Any board can be surfed if conditions prevail, taking into consideration the judging criteria (Annual major event may have separate divisions)
Under 16 Boys & Under 16 Girls (TBA)
