Words & photos from Warren Hawke: Steve Perry current president of Sumner Longboarders came up with the idea of Quane Day and club secretary Glenn Harvey assisted with the organization. ‘It’s about the love and respect for Denis Quane of Quane Surfboards. To inform those club members who started surfing later in life of his significance and contribution to surfing in Christchurch and NZ.

A club contest was scheduled for Sunday past using their four Old Quane Mals – early sixties D finned replicas made by Denis 20 years ago for the club but the surf didn’t really cooperate. Johnny Warriner of Breakwater Surfboards who started making boards in about 1974 was also there to show some of his early models.

The weather was damn cold so after a couple of hours of good-natured board design and construction banter and a sausage sizzle it was decided to call it a day.

And on this Thursday October 17 – the “Shapers Rave – Magic Mystery & Mirrors”

Sumner Long Boarders are also holding a Shapers Rave – Magic Mystery and Mirrors – Where Denis and Johnny will divulge some of their secrets.

Denis will also be the guest speaker at their next club meeting - Season 1 Episode One 'The Quane Surfboards Beginning'. Denis started building boards in the late 1950s from plywood and moved to making fiberglass popouts and finally shaped blanks in the early 1960s. (Two more episodes are planned.)

Shapers Rave is at Seve's house this Thursday evening - those interested can contact Steve on Whats App or Sumner Boardriders Facebook page.
