“Well I’ve got my fingers crossed now,” said John Sorby when we asked if he might be wondering why we’d phone him out of the blue on a Sunday afternoon. So we told him he’d just won the Carabine custom “Shakey” in our subscriber draw. “Are you bullshitting me!? Aah man I’ve got goosebumps up and down my arms right now!”

John was driving back to his home in Newcastle after a long day up the coast at the Saltwater Malibu Club’s first comp for the year. Originally from Old Bar, John’s a foundation member of the club and is back up north often.

A land surveyor, turns out John is also an award winning artist, painting landscapes, semi abstracts, and surf pieces. “Hey you know I’ve been going to the Crescent Classic since it started and I’ve always headed off to the afternoon board draws thinking I’d have to eventually win one. Never got a look in, but now this! This is just the most fantastic call!”

And what a gem you’ve won here John. Carabine have been building surfboards for 51 years straight and it’s a label that runs deep in the DNA of South Coast and Australian surfing. “The Shakey is a modern log and well-balanced in every sense,” says Carabine’s honcho Shane Hornby.  “Wide point centre, 50/50 rails, and the rocker is quite flat up front with a kick in the tail giving control on the tip, and it’s easy to turn when you need it. Custom from 9’0” to 9’10”:
