The Tuawera Longboard Classic is a new longboarding and retro shortboarding competition based out of Scarborough beach in Christchurch, New Zealand. It ran on the 18th of December 2021 and we hope to make it an annual event with a new date for 22 coming out in the next two months.

Our goal was to make an inclusive surfing competition that would be fun for everyone and winning wasn’t peoples end goal. We tried to make Tuawera more like a journey for people, letting them meet other surfers and share smiles and waves.

This year our starting year we were just trying to build the competition. We had hoped to have around 40 people enter to cover costs, we were blown away with the 78 entries we had on the day!

The weather the week leading up to the weekend of the competition was rainy and extremely windy with close to no surf. We were quite worried we were going to have to call off the first year. We waited until the rain cleared on the Friday and started preparations. On Saturday when we woke up we were greeted with perfect offshore waves, sun, and a whole bunch of excitement. It was going to be a great day.

The surfing started off at 8:15 after our opening Karakia (a Maori tradition to start the day off) and it set the tone for the day. The day wasn’t over there though with a full day surfing the party continued into the night where we danced away and had a great time.

We hope to bring a two day event next year to allow for more entries.

Thanks Tuawera.
