Record breaking paddle-out at Torquay – news & vid

28 March 24

From Surfrider Foundation Australia:

Over last weekend, Torquay took it to another level, with a record-breaking paddle out to stand up for a healthy ocean and oppose the biggest seismic blasting proposal in history.

Thank you to everyone who showed up. Without you all, none of this would happen, and from the whole team at Surfrider Foundation Australia, we and the waves thank you.  Thank you to the tireless work of volunteers, and our partners Ben and Jerry’s, OCEAN, SOPEC, the Australian Marine Conservation Society, and Friends of the Earth.

We currently await NOPSEMA and Resource Minister Madeleine King to decide whether to approve or reject the seismic blasting proposal by TGS. How can you help? Now is the time to contact your local MP to voice your concern. Get in touch, give them a call, write an email, make sure you hold them accountable.

A message from the Campaign Director

“Today marks our biggest call to our Government that these blasting companies they are investing in have not been adequately engaging the coastal communities across the south-east states that will be exposed to the impacts of their activity. Their practices are destructive and not worth the cost to our environment.”

“It has been reported this week that Victoria is expected to have a gas shortage. Yet in recent years, over three-quarters of domestic natural gas production has been exported to other markets. We don’t need more gas. We need to transition away from it.”  - Drew McPherson
