Byron Bay lost a treasure when Max Pendergast died recently, aged 80. To know Max was to like and admire him. A Byron original, he was born in the town, and he took his last breath at home there while holding the hand of his forever love Yvonne.

Max and Von met in the surf at Tallows some 60 years ago, and theirs was a true love story. Together they raised a fine family, and in their easy no-fuss way made countless friends locally and around the world. And they remained a smiling and positive presence in the surf across the decades, even as they watched The Pass and Wategos go from just a few locals sharing waves to the teeming line-ups of today. And Yvon can still be found out there catching a few in between chats.

When Max grew up in Byron it was a small industrialised town dependent on the meatworks, sand mining, and whaling. It was a tough, somewhat smelly town, but it was full of characters and stories, and it had a rough charm all its own – which Max captured perfectly in his book Byron Bay the Way It Was: Through the Eyes of a True Local. Max was also a handy photographer, and this is a book only he could write (you might still be able to find a copy online).

Max was also a fine artist, enjoyed dabbling with cartoons and posting them on social media from time to time, and he and Von were foundation members of the Byron Bay Malibu Club. They also ran the Future Legends events for many years, encouraging kids to grab anything that floats while gently educating them in the fun and safety aspects of surfing.

A full life, well lived. Rest in Peace Max.

The following is a post from Facebook by Max and Yvon’s daughter Kirra – re. the paddle out for Max

Celebrating Max’s life:

The Pendergast family, Vonnie, Jy, Shaz, Marley, Hendrix, Morgan, Kirra, Laith and our extended families are celebrating Max’s life at 3pm on Saturday, April 27 at Wategos Beach.

This day is about honouring Max in a way he would have loved . . . a paddle out at Wategos. We’ll talk stories, share memories, laughter, and love.

Bring your surf crafts, wear your most colourful clothes, and share your favourite memories of Max if you choose.

It’s an afternoon filled with joy, remembrance, and the spirit of Aloha and togetherness that Max always cherished.

Whether you knew him from the waves of the world, or another memorable moment that’s stayed with you, we invite you to contribute to this special gathering.

The Pendergast family looks forward to seeing you there, celebrating Max’s life in a sea of colours and stories.
