Places Filling Fast for 2019 Noosa Festival of Surfing

6 December 18

It would seem as if Christmas has come early for several hundred longboarders around the world, with many of the available spots almost filled for the 2019 Noosa Festival of Surfing.

Demand for places in many of the 15 or more divisions is always high, as the Festival is such an iconic event. However, this year, with the Festival’s change in management and the participation by the World Surf League (WSL), there has been an unprecedented influx in applications. With the WSL providing two wildcard entries to the each of the first two place-getters in the Men’s and Women’s Open divisions, there is a material incentive for competitors in those events.

The Teams Challenge division offers one of the greatest opportunities for Festival competition participation. One of the most dynamic divisions of the Festival’s schedule, the Teams Challenge pits teams of four surfers against one another in a fast and furious, 30-minute relay, accruing the top single-wave score of each team member and penalising points should any member not make it back to the beach in time.

The Teams event is open to anyone, amateur or professional. Indeed, Teams will be able to bid for a select number of pro surfers to join and compete in their team at the Board Meeting Surf Charity dinner, being held on Sunday 3 March 2019 from 7pm at Peppers, Noosa. Details of the dinner will be released shortly.

“There’s not much space left,” says World Surfaris Director, John Finlay, “Many of the divisions ultimately fill to capacity, but this year the early demand is really high. We urge anyone interested in participating to get their entry in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. At this stage, we may well have to close entries in some divisions early.”
