Lining up a day of fun at the Kirra Longboard Klassic this weekend

17 November 21

A strong contingent of Sunshine Coast surfers is set to bolster the standard at the 2021 Kirra Longboard Klassic on this Saturday, November 20.

From its humble beginnings as a fun comp for locals just over three years ago, the word has spread that longboard surfing is back in vogue at Kirra.

The relaxed air where having fun is more important than winning honours the surfers like Wayne Deane, MP, and Mark ‘Macca’ McNamarra who are all now getting tubed to the max in the next life.

While Deany and MP had a huge following, Macca was just as much a standout, coaching newcomers, always with a huge grin on his face, just having fun.

In his honour the major trophy for the event is the "Macca" awarded to the surfer having the most fun.

Together with a ‘Macca” model longboard from Clearwater Surfboards as the major spot prize for competitors, and ‘Macca Lager’ from our mates at ‘Your Mates Brewery’ its going to be a fun day.

The biggest increase in entries has come from female competitors with the biggest division the Hi Poke Women’s Amateur. Overall women now make up nearly half the entries received.

Surfing starts at 6 am with a Fluro Saturday get-together, a mental health initiative from the One Wave Foundation, where everyone is welcome to join in, before the competition starts in earnest, for competitors aged from 11 to 72. During the day there will be an opportunity for surfers that due to disability need an extra hand to catch a few waves before the contest finishes with a fancy dress surf off.

The Kirra Longboard Klassic is being conducted together with the inaugural Women’s Surf Festival. Here there will be workshops, presentations, learn to surf lessons, women surfing clean waves, market stalls, and even a movie.
