LISTEN: "Painting in reverse" with velvet painter Baron von Miller

When Baron von Miller decided to paint on black velvet, he had big shoes to fill. His father Percy Miller is arguably Australia's most famous black velvet painter.

Velvet painting replaces a typical plain cotton or linen canvas with velvet and requires a different technique, which Baron calls "painting in reverse".

Not a common style in contemporary painting, Baron's work is popular. He has sold works internationally and had his black velvet paintings featured in Hollywood blockbuster "Battleship" starring musician Rihanna, and actors Liam Neeson and Alexander Skarsgard.

The Scottsdale artist now has an exhibition in the south of Tasmania at a vintage and second-hand shop in Copping.

He spoke with ABC's Lucie Cutting about following in his dad's footsteps, technique and his other passion in life – surfing.
