Kiwi surfer fought off a shark and lived to tell the story

Tai Juneau, 26, was surfing in the waters off New Plymouth in New Zealand’s North Island when his fingers were partially severed from the shark bite on Tuesday.

The former NZ Ski team member was paddling out the back past the break when the shark nipped his hand.

“I’d been trading waves with some guys for about an hour and had seen some funny water activity, but didn’t think anything of it,” he told Stuff.

He said he wasn’t in pain, but was disgusted looking at his bloodied hand.

The shark then returned and the Tai said he felt some tugs on his legrope. At this point, he was reminded when Mick Fanning was in a similar situation and got off the board and into the water.

Fanning has previously said he was trying to keep the board between himself and the animal when he was attacked in Jeffreys Bay in 2015.

“I didn’t want to give it a reason to lash out any more,” Junea said when recalling why he want into the water.

“Instinctually I just gave some massive kicks and ended up connecting with one of them.”

The shark swam off after being kicked and Junea got back on his board. He told the other surfers and was ashore within 10 seconds of the attack.

Once on shore he was able to get to his car and drive to a nearby hospital. He underwent surgery and had his tendons reattached after they were sliced from the bite.

He has managed to see the funny side in the ordeal with his friends now referring to him as shark bait.
