JESSE JAGS THE BLACK SQUARE PRO – PLB BOARD GIVEAWAY

20-year-old IT guy Jesse Gerlach was heading for a paddle at Queenscliff when we stopped him in his tracks with a call saying he’d just become our 89th subscriber board winner and had scored a Black Square PRO model.

A forever Manly local, Jesse has been surfing around North Steyne and Queensy since he was seven, “mostly on big single-fins and mid-lengths, and got to say I’m so stoked to get a modern tri set-up, especially for when it get’s a bit solid.”

We were a little chuffed too when he added, “Love having the mag around by the way, checking out photos on paper is a hell of a lot better than looking at them on your phone.” (Go Gen Z!)

So anyway, you’ve gone and won yourself a finely tuned machine here Jesse. Our last six boards have all been big singles so this time we’re rapt to present the PRO from shaper Ryan Chelman. A lifetime surfer raised in his parent’s old school surf shop, Ryan’s a “self taught shaper and glasser” who’s built all sorts of surfboards from start-to-finish under his own label on the Mid North Coast, and the last two years “testing skills and gaining knowledge” at one of Australia’s busiest production factories, the Glass Lab on the Gold Coast.

Ryan still designs, shapes and glasses all of his own Black Square boards, running the label with wife Kristy, and applying everything he’s learnt to every board.

“The PRO has been constantly refined over the last eight or ten years in competitions and at beachbreaks and points up and down the East Coast. It suits most conditions but thrives when the waves have some punch. It’s super responsive, loves tight arcs, and carries plenty of speed and drive.”
