Surfers on Australia’s NSW North Coast found themselves with some majestic company when a pair of whales sliced the waves alongside them.
This is rerun of our most visited post from this week in 2021. This footage did the rounds of the news channels and the social swamp, but this is a great edit. If you haven’t seen it check it out – and if you have it’s worth another look:
A pod of dolphins was hunting bait fish below the surfers at Lennox Head, when a pair of minke whales broke the surface.
The whales measured about eight metres (26 feet) and experts told 9News they could weigh up to 10 tonnes.
Photographer Daniel Cook captured the encounter on his drone: "You never think of seeing something like that, so yeah, unbelievable," he said.
Seaworld's head of marine science Wayne Phillips was "amazed" by the footage: "Although it's not rare for minkes to be feeding on bait balls of small fish like that, to surf into that bail ball is just amazing."
