That happy bloke is our 85th subscriber board winner Glenn Quince.
Black Square’s Ryan Chelman testing a tiny single-fin plank.

Glenn Quince had just got out of the water after an early at Long Reef when we phoned to say he’d won the Black Square Surfboards Noserider.
“That surf was pretty good but how about this for topping it off! What an incredible phone call to get before work!”
Turns out Glenn is a member of the “Hyenas Longboard Club”. Umm, the what? “It’s basically about 20 guys from all walks of life, managing directors, garbos, office workers, guys on tools - who some might say are past their prime. The name came about ’cause some of us were out the back one time laughing away and a couple of guys nearby said we sounded like a bunch of hyenas.
“We surf Saturday and Sunday mornings, mostly at Manly, have the odd social drink and a few trips up the coast each year. No comps, so it’s never serious, and you don’t have to worry about how good the next guy is. This board is going to go down pretty well with them . . . and you know I’ve never won anything beyond a meat-tray, for sure nothing as substantial as this, a new handmade longboard, amazing!”
Yeah it’s a special one. Black Square Surfboards Ryan Chelman is a life-time surfer who grew up in his parent’s surf shop, and he builds all his boards start-to-finish - handshaping, glassing, tints, sprays, and sanding, while running the factory and business with wife Kristy at Tweed Heads.
The Noserider has been refined to suit smaller conditions, with a wider nose and tail for a more parallel outline, 60/40 rails, a subtle concave through to a flipped tail, and in the classic specs 9’2” x 23” x 3”. It’s just perfect for knee to waist-high and long running waves.
There’s a lot of love and thought in this model and this one’s yours Glenn.
