Gals on Mals: Women’s Surf Celebration at Yallingup - news from West Australia

15 March 25

News from Babs at the Indian ocean Longboard Club:

Last weekend, the Indian Ocean Longboard Club (IOLC) hosted its 5th annual Gals on Mals event, coinciding perfectly with International Women's Day. The event, originally founded by Claire Edwards to bring together women of the water, has grown into a much-anticipated tradition.

The day kicked off with 30 competitors, aged 15 to 50, taking to the waves in pristine conditions at Yallingup on Saturday morning. Among the participants was a special mother-daughter duo, sharing the experience of surfing together and adding a beautiful layer of connection to the day. While the weather shifted later, bringing wind and overcast skies, it didn’t dampen the spirits of the surfers or the vibrant energy of the event. The camaraderie and love for the ocean shone through, with participants cheering each other on and embracing the elements with big smiles.

The event also celebrated standout moments with special awards:

Gals on Mals Spirit:  Michelle Campbell
Best Nose Ride:  Molly Hosken
Highest Scoring Wave:  Milena Lorsignol
Most Courageous:  Pippa Harrison
Best Wipe Out:  Ines Brixner
Biggest Frother:  Kate Saraga
Biggest Wave:  Crystal Body
Junior Awards:  Abbey Lovell and Meg Jenkins

A heartfelt thank you goes to Shae Sheridan for her outstanding organization of the event, ensuring everything ran smoothly. Registration for the event filled up within just 12 hours, highlighting the enthusiasm of the female longboarding community in WA.

Special mention to club president Evan Ledger, who paddled out on the day with surfers experiencing Yallingup for the first time, offering guidance and encouragement.

Adam Lane, as head judge, not only managed the competition with expertise but also welcomed competitors to try their hand at judging under his direction.

A big shoutout to Chris Trantham for organizing the heat draws and Paige for welcoming and registering competitors, keeping the event flowing seamlessly while spreading the froth. The day wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of the club members who volunteered their time and energy to support the event.

Gratitude also extends to the event’s generous sponsors: Ceacea Swimwear, We Are Feel Good Inc., Beach Toes by Sambora, and Mo l'Artiste, whose contributions added extra sparkle to the day. The morning began with a peaceful yoga session led by Kaivalya Yoga, setting a mindful tone before the surfing started.

A special thank you to the volunteer photographers — Pastime Moodboard, Andrew Kenworthy, and IOLC's Mick Marlin — who captured the magic of the day from the water, land, and drone, preserving unforgettable memories.

The Indian Ocean Longboard Club is always excited to welcome new members and sponsors. Whether you're keen to compete, volunteer, or support the club, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out via our social media pages or come along to our next club round to become part of this vibrant longboarding community.

Here’s to many more waves and the ever-growing community of women supporting women in the water!
