From Groms to Grans – Kirra Longboard Klassic celebrates every surfing gen

The 2026 Kirra Longboard Klassic is proving once again that longboarding is one of the few sports where generations come together to share the same waves, with competitors ranging from an 11-year-old groms to some of Australia's most respected surfing veterans.

Event Director Sean McKeown said this year's event has attracted an overwhelming response across almost every division, demonstrating the growing popularity of traditional longboard surfing and the unique culture that surrounds it.

"The Kirra Longboard Klassic is all about bringing people together. Whether you're just starting out or you've been surfing for more than 60 years, there's a place for you."

The youngest competitor entered so far is 11-year-old Nylah Matthies, who will compete in the Junior Girls and Fancy Dress divisions.

Nylah says she loves longboarding because "it is peaceful and calm." She also enjoys sharing the water with older surfers.

"I like the older surfers because they're not trying to impress anyone – they just want to have fun."

At the other end of the age spectrum is longboarding legend Trevor Brady, widely regarded as the unofficial Over 80’s world champion. Trevor has been surfing since 1963 and continues to inspire surfers of every generation.

"It is an honour to surf with the kids," Brady said.

The contrast between Nylah and Trevor perfectly captures the spirit of the Kirra Longboard Klassic—an event where age is no barrier and everyone shares the same passion for surfing.

With entries flooding in across multiple divisions, organisers have already expanded both the Open Amateur and Over 45 divisions by adding extra heats to accommodate the strong demand.

However, organisers say they have now reached the maximum capacity of the competition schedule.

"We've managed to squeeze in a couple of extra heats, but that's it," McKeown said.

"The program simply cannot be extended any further. If you're thinking about entering, now is the time to do it because once the remaining spots are filled, entries will close."

The 2026 Kirra Longboard Klassic will be held from 31 July to 2 August at the world-famous Kirra Point and features divisions for surfers of all ages and abilities, including juniors, amateurs, adaptive surfers, families, military personnel, masters competitors, and elite longboarders.
