Years ago, while making Searching for Michael Peterson, I found myself digging through the garages and cupboards of Australia's surf filmmakers looking for footage of the famously enigmatic Michael. As I did, I couldn't help but wonder what other hidden gold the rusting film cans might contain.

15 years later and I’m still intrigued, so we've gathered a small team to scan and restore as much of Australia's Surf Film heritage as possible. As surfers we know how influential these images were on Australia's culture, which is why it's so important that they're preserved for future generations.

The footage is free to watch for everyone.

All you need to do is sign up at www.thesurffilmarchive.com.au

There’s some beautiful Bob Evans clips up there already, and we’ve got heaps more footage on the way.

The scanning and restoration process isn't cheap or easy. Which is why, in the next month or so, we're going to run a crowdfunding campaign. If you like what you see we hope you'll chip in.

Maybe you have some ideas or want to be involved, or maybe you made some money in or out of surfing and this is the kind of project you’d like to get behind?

We can work together to make this archive something beautiful to share with future generations. This is our heritage. Let’s look after it.

Thanks so much, and thanks to Pacific Longboarder magazine for their support.

 - Sincerely, Jolyon Hoff - surfer and filmmaker
