Dreamy waves & upsets at the Victorian Titles – Day 1 wrap & photos

30 April 23

From Surfing Victoria: With a solid swell hitting the Surf Coast, Point Impossible's right-hand pointbreak delivered clean 3-foot waves all day with the sun shining above.

The second round of the 2023 Victorian Longboard Titles saw pumping waves and huge upsets throughout the day.

The incredible surf and a prospect of a wildcard to the WSL Bells Beach Longboard Classic World Tour Event saw the surfers step up their performances with multiple excellent scores posted.

Angela King (Torquay) stood out ahead of the as she picked out the best waves and maximised the scoring potential of the long walls of Impossos.

She got off to a great start in the Longboard Open Women's semifinals as she trimmed down the line on a long open set wave with her feet hanging over the nose before laying into a searing drop knee carve and then another hang five. The judges awarded King with an 8.00-point ride, giving her the momentum to take out the heat with a 14.13-point combined heat total.

“It was amazing conditions out there, very dreamy for an event,” exclaimed Angela King.

“The other two girls in my heat were so talented so it was like surfing a final,” she added.

“I’m very excited to go into the final tomorrow and I hope I click just as well with the waves as I did in this heat.”

King moved onto finals day with the current number one on the rankings, Molly Powel (Anglesea), while knocking out current number two on the rankings, Bea Conroy (Point Lonsdale), in a big upset.

On the Open Men's side of the draw, the Dunton brothers looked to be the ones to beat going into finals day, with both taking out their semifinals convincingly.

In semifinal one, Tasman Dunton (McCrae) used his strong forehand attack to score the highest wave of the day, a 9.00 point ride. Continuing on his solid surfing, Dunton smashed the lip various times on a subsequent wave to earn an 8.17 point ride and the heat win.

In an upset, Will Cousins (Torquay) came in second with the current number one, Ben Considine (Torquay) being knocked out. With Considine bowing out in the semifinals, this leaves the wildcard spot wide open.

Sam Dunton (McCrae) took note of the style of surfing his brother was being scored on and powerfully attacked the lip on each wave he paddled into. This gave Dunton a 14.06 point combined heat total and a spot in the final. Also, being the only person to make the final in Round 1, and now in Round 2, this gives Sam Dunton a very good opportunity to claim the wildcard going into finals day.

In the Over 50 men Greg Brown (Torquay) positioned his board in angles no one else could when pulling off his forehand snaps. On his first and last wave, Brown went vertical on multiple turns to obtain a 15.84 point combined heat total.

With another great day of surf forecasted for Point Possible on Day 2 (Sunday), there's sure to be plenty more action left.

The call will be at 7.15 am for a 7.30 am start at Point Impossible.
