Did you know? The term “goofyfoot” sprung from Walt Disney’s character Goofy!

In 1937 Walt Disney made the first-ever animated surf movie Hawaiian Holiday. It starred Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Donald Duck, a crab, a starfish and fatefully, Goofy – who is pretty much the main character of the plot.

He hangs out at the beach, plays ukulele, learns to surf, and rides the waves with his right foot forward! (On an alaia at Waikiki)

And if you didn’t know this already, that’s where the handle “goofyfoot” springs from, and to this day it remains one of the oldest terms still current in surfing jargon.

So, 35% of you out there have your surfing defined by an inept, clumsy, good-natured, hick dog in a turtleneck. Explains A LOT!
