DAVE WINS THE OCEANSIDE 9’3” BLUNT

3 April 24

Dave Maxwell is a didge-playing, old mal-frothing, cat loving, hard working father of two and granddad of three out of Alexandra Headland on the Sunny Coast, and a hard man to catch on the phone. He didn’t answer the first half dozen times we rang, no doubt thinking the random number was a spammer and not some mag wanting to give him a brand new board! But he sure got a wee bit excited when he finally picked up and heard he’d won the Oceanside Surfcraft trad-styled 9’3” Blunt.

“Man I can’t wait to get this out at The Bluff! This is just incredible! I collect and ride old mals and this will fit the the quiver so perfectly!” (Then he popped a beer.)

Yes indeed it will Dave! The Oceanside Blunt is an Involvement style single-fin complete with volan clear deck and resin swirl bottom, and all Australian made.

Oceanside shaper Dru Sheppard was born and raised on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and he’s been immersed in surfing and surrounded by surfboards and board chat his entire life. His father Russell and uncle Phil made some classic surf films through the ’60s and ’70s, among them the early underground longboard movie The Ultimate Life, then Our Day in the Sun, and the cinema-release A Winters Tale. And recently they’ve released the acclaimed Mona Boys – Surfing in the Sixties (worth a Google).

“My dad, and those movies with their clean styles of riding waves on all those different boards, heavily influenced my own approach to surfing and shaping. I got to travel the East Coast when I was really young, and then later surfed through Europe, Africa, Indo, and North and South America, and I guess all this input led to Oceanside Surfcraft . . . and a focus on function and form.”

“The Blunt is 9’3” x 22 ¼” x 2 7/8”, the nose and tail are similar in width, and the rails are pinched with some roll through the tail. The resin swirl was done by Rhino Laminating, but we’ve kept the deck clear so as not to overcook the look and glassed it in volan as it always ages gracefully.”

And it’s all yours grandad!
