DANNY IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA SCORES THE SUGAR MOUNTAIN

“Fair dinkum!” was the fine Aussie expression that first popped out of Daniel Slater after a stunned silence when told he’d just won the Sugar Mountain HTD model in our subscriber draw. Pretty sure he thought someone was pulling his leg there for a sec.

From Robe on the Limestone Coast of South Australia, turns out father of four Danny lives in “an asbestos shack in the middle of millionaires row on the beach at Little Bay” and his local is the 15-k stretch of sand at the aptly named Long Beach.

“You can still drive on the beach down here, and the surf is pretty forgiving for us older crew. The better surfers mostly go to Stoney Rise. As a surfer I’m more enthusiastic than skilled, and for sure my youngest daughter Lilly will get as much use out of this board as I do, she’ll be equally excited! Let’s consider this a shared acquisition!”

Well it’s some board to be sharing guys. Jordan Nobel’s been a pivotal shaper in the Victorian and Australian log and longboard scene for over 20 years, and these days is building his Sugar Mountain boards from start to finish himself – design, shape, glass, sand, finish, the works. A class surfer himself, Jordan makes boards designed to work and the HTD (Heavy Tree Device) at 9’4” is his all ’round middle of the road Australian log.
