This new set-up on Hainan Island is billed as China’s first wave pool, but back in 2019 we ran vids and a story here of a giant Chinese knock-off of Slater’s Surf Ranch. It was located inland in Henan Province but shut down in 2022 as the equipment was problematic and the wave itself wasn’t really all that great.
This second first wave pool though looks to be a whole new level for a tub – with waves ranging up to 2.7 metres and a variety of long walls, A-frames, ramps and barrels. It’s still in the test period but is set for a public launch mid this month.
Here’s the news release and promo vid direct from the SURFLAND PerfectSwell Riyue Bay Surf Resort:
"PerfectSwell® Riyue Bay Surf Resort marks the debut of PS Surf Technology in China. In partnership with China Tourism Group, the venue is a world-class addition to the global network of PS high-performance surf experiences.
"Located in China's surfing epicenter, Riyue Bay, the landmark venue combines cutting-edge surf technology, hospitality excellence, and a tropical environment to deliver an unparalleled surf experience. Open to the public on November 11th, Hainan island is now a must make surf trip for enthusiasts of all levels.
"The video, directed by Bruno Zanin, features Patti Zhou, Cruz Dinofa, Zeke, Ryji Masuda, Rob Kelly and the Kenworthy Family ripping the newly crafted waves. PerfectSwell® is powered by American Wave Machines."
