CHECK OUT THE LINE-UP: Surf + Music + Maldives

9 January 20

Sunnyboys, Richard Clapton, Darryl Braithwaite, Casey Chambers, Hoodoo Gurus, Xavier Rudd, Bernard Fanning, Barnsey! Seems like a no-brainer now, but in 2014 when The Perfect Wave’s marketing manager Ben Horvath and his boss Jamie Gray first floated the idea of staging gigs with name musos at a surf resort in the middle of the Indian Ocean we thought it was pretty ambitious. Like, how’s this ever going to fly? What would we know!

Donavon Frankenreiter was the first artist for the Surf Music in Paradise series at Kandooma Resort and his week of performances went down a storm, but he’s a serious surfer so no surprise he was keen to do it. Pete Murray and Matt Smith followed, then Tex Perkins and Murray Patterson, Grinspoon’s Phil Jamieson, Bernard Fanning and his band, the Hoodoo Gurus . . . and it was clear this concept was much loved by the fans and the performers. Like Jimmy Barnes - he’s been back three times with Diesel, daughter Mahalia and his full band, and he’s lined up again for 2020!

These are performers who can pack major venues so how good must this joint be to convince them to do gigs for a bunch of punters lounging on beanbags on a spec of an island. Over to Barnsey, “Kandooma is spectacularly beautiful. We do six shows so it’s kind of a busy week, but because it’s so small we can actually sit and talk to everybody. The surfers go of course but there’re also a lot of families, and people who just love the Maldives. I want to get right out there in the surf now because we were surfing and learning on these big Malibu boards in this really pretty beginner’s break, small waves and everybody can get up. But this year I’m determined I’m going to get out into the big stuff where you get hammered against the reef and that serious stuff! I’m keen!”

Joining Barnsey with gigs at Kandooma in 2020 will be Sunnyboys, Darryl Braithwaite and Richard Clapton, Kasey Chambers (cool!), Xavier Rudd, and who knows what others Ben’s working on . . . you wouldn’t put it past him to get Paul and Ringo down there.
