CARNIEL SCORES THE JYE BYRNES

24 March 20

“I’ve got shivers up my spine! Unbelievable!” laughed Dave Carniel when we phoned him on a Saturday afternoon to say he’d won the Jye Byrnes V-Wizard in our 86th subscriber board giveaway.

A lifetime surfer from the Goldie (born in the old Southport Hospital as true locals must be apparently), Dave is the hardworking man behind Gold Coast Tiling Service.

And turns out he’s also a forever member of the Narrowneck Longboard Club and was heading to their monthly comp (pre social distancing) the next morning: “I’ll get the winner photo with the crew, geez I’ll enjoy that!”

Also turns out Dave’s name was the first out of the hat in the board giveaway at their 2019 end-of-year presentation night: “I thought I’d won it, stepped up to collect and was informed they’d started with third place and I’d won a dinner voucher . . . so now this haha!” Yes, revenge is a dish best served cold David. Welcome to your Jye Byrnes V-Wizard!

Jye has been featuring in PLB since Chris Bystrom’s early issues in the late ’90s, when he was the hairy grom out of Newcastle already riding all his own shapes. Through the 2000s he consistently ranked in the top five on the world longboard tour, and travelled Indo and Hawaii where he had a hard-earned rep for taking the drop. It’s a unique grounding for a shaper and designer, and he’s still in the water and the shaping bay every day, and loving it.

The V-Wizard’s outline is inspired by classic mid ’60s longboards, but with some modern tweaks. “It’s got a flatter rocker, so it’s an exceptional paddler and trim queen, but with a refined vee though the tail so that it’s still a functional turner,” says Jye. “It was designed with feedback from customers and teamriders wanting a traditional-styled board for all conditions. It noserides easy on steeper walls and through the flat bits on a long drawn-out concave, so its basically a modern log and a go-to board for small days.”

And quite a statement for when the club comps are back on Dave!
