When it comes to off-the-grid surf travel, Englishman Sam Bleakley has perhaps been surfing’s greatest wanderer since Peter Troy. Better known in recent years as the anchor of the WSL’s live coverage of the World Longboard Series, Sam surfed the tour himself back in the 2000s and was a multiple European Longboard Champion, while somehow finding time to research and write half a dozen surf travel books. Over time these morphed into the acclaimed Brilliant Corners documentary series which the WSL have now got behind.
In this first chapter of Sam’s journey through India he travels to Kerala and visits the growingly popular surf and yoga retreat Surf & Soul, where locals have discovered a new career path based around surf tourism. Here the joy of surfing has changed the life of younger generations and provided possibilities far beyond the traditions of their ancestors.
Coincidentally, we have 8-pages on the Brilliant Corners series in the current issue of Pacific Longboarder (Issue 101) and who better to pick Sam’s brains than intrepid surf traveller Lucy Small? Lucy has written some exceptional essays and profiles for our mag over the past eight years or so, and she’s back with two pieces for the current issue, including Brilliant Corners and Into the Great Unknown covering longboarding’s changing landscape.
