Continuing the tradition of great surfing, friendship, philanthropy, and environmental kindness. Big Stick Surfing Association’s Logjam! contest is recognized in the California surfing community as the premier classic surfboard event. The contest features the best surfers in California showing off graceful, ‘old school’-style surfing on surfboards made before 1970 that weigh over 30 pounds! Logjam! attracts contestants and viewers from all over California, where the cliff side overlook at Pleasure Point Park, Santa Cruz, provides panoramic views of the competition – and this is the 18th Logjam! no less/
Charity Fundraiser - APRIL 28/29 - SAVE THE DATE
Logjam! is a charity fundraiser and from it’s inception in 2001 to present, the event has raised and donated over $105,000 to worthy causes such as $53,200 in scholarships to local high schoolers going on to college. We’re especially proud to have donated $18,500 to help needy and disabled kids have a day at the beach thanks to Ride-A-Wave Foundation. We also support local organizations protecting our coast. The Santa Cruz Surfrider Foundation and Surfer’s Environmental Alliance received around $12,000 over the years and to preserve local surfing history, we’ve donated $2,500 to the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum. Junior Guards groups have received around $2,500 in ‘scholarships’ for kids who couldn’t afford to participate. Our new charity partner since 2016 is Surfaid International, which brings medical and infrastructure support to remote Indo islands. (http://www.surfaid.org)
Media coverage of past Logjams has included The New York Times*, Los Angeles Times, the San Jose Mercury News, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Santa Cruz Sentinel, Longboard Magazine and the Santa Cruz Good Times. Internationally, our event was featured in a story in Switzerland’s largest newspaper, Tages Anzeiger, in 2009. In 2013, Logjam! became an official Coalition of Surfingf Clubs contest, bringing many more entrants from Clubs throughout California (http://www.surfclubs.org/logjam.html). For the first time last year, entries topped out at 110.
We intend to continue our Green theme this, the 18th Logjam! to tie in with the recent (2012) designation of Santa Cruz as a World Surfing Reserve and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Each of these entities is now threatened with oil drilling and Big Stick, dedicated to a cleaner environment, intends to work against this. As we did last year, this year's Logjam! features a solar power supply, a 'no disposable plastics' approach, which will include a water station and reusable water bottles, reusable cloth Goodie Bags for competitors and staff, and an effort to minimize disposable waste with our vendors.
Our Club motto is: "Friendship and Camaraderie both in and out of the water". The soul of Logjam! is friendship and fun. Lifelong friendships are made each year. The Logjam! contest structure builds friendship through intergenerational and mixed-gender heats in which women and men of all ages surf together. Many smiles! There is a special award for good sportsmanship.
