DISASTER DECLARED IN WAKE OF CYCLONE HELEN
Tuesday, 8 January 2008

The state government has activated disaster relief assistance for far north Queensland in the wake of torrential rain caused by Cyclone Helen.

Acting Emergency Services Minister Andrew Fraser said assistance would be provided for six local government areas - Cairns City, Johnstone, Cardwell, Mareeba, Atherton and Eacham.

The Bureau of Meteorology said heavy falls had been recorded in the far north for the past 24 hours to 4pm (AEST) including Bulgun Creek (178mm), Bolinda Estate (140mm), Davidson Creek (121mm) and Tully (118mm).

A flood warning has been issued for the Tully River and adjacent coastal streams and the bureau expects further heavy rainfall on Tuesday night.

Minor flooding is possible on Wednesday morning.

Mr Fraser said personal hardship grants of $160 per person and up to $740 per family for essentials such as food, dry clothes and accommodation were available.

"Assistance is also available for building and contents repair and replacement," Mr Fraser said.

The maximum assistance, which is means-tested, is $9,800 for individuals and $13,200 for couples or families.

"Another form of assistance is for the reimbursement costs for local councils' extraordinary disaster management costs such as tarps, machinery hire and private debris clean-up," Mr Fraser added.
