GERMAN SURF FILM FESTIVAL
Friday, 8 November 2013

HHonolulu Events is just now setting up the starting shot for the surf film-festival season, which is filled with European and German and world premieres. The Surffilmfestivals in Hamburg, Cologne and Munich will give you in each city a 4 day-long journey to escape from the daily routine. Enter the world of bikini bottoms, wild tube riding, urban surfing and the desire for beaches and big waves.

This year’s workshops focus on film and photography to provide handy hints to the ambitious need for documentation of our generation. We will support young surf photographers, getting them mentored by professionals. In addition, the participants have the opportunity to attend a shape workshop following the motto “Building your essential surf trip equipment” which will be held by Backwood surfboards. Here you can use your own creativity!

In close connection with the workshops, a national shortie competition, “Blue Tomato Best Shortie”, will be held to give you the chance to present your work on
a big screen to a great and thankful audience. Be a part of the festival and hand in your work until November 12th (Hamburg), November 24th (Cologne) or January 14th (Munich). There are no limits set to your creativity as long as it’s a film about surfing not about cricket and has a maximum length of 10 minutes. The highly desired trophy “Best Shortie Award”, as well as 300 Euro cash, camera equipment worth 1.000 Euro per city as well as a lot of fame will be your reward. Make sure to send your application for the short film competition to: contact@hhonolulu-events.de

Stop 1 – Hanseatic City of Hamburg
November 20th to 23rd the Studio Kino at St. Pauli in Hamburg will be the venue for our first stop of the surf film festival tour. Forget about the surf forecasts for any of your favorite spots, they will be irrelevant since HHonolulu Events is putting them on the big screen.
The whole event starts on Wednesday, 13th of November with an absolute highlight: Storm Surfers 3D! Watch Tom Carroll ́s and Ross Clarke-Jones ́ hunt for the ultimate wave at 8 pm. at Zeise Kino.

One week later, Wednesday 20th of November our local dealer for surf equipment, Wellenreitshop, will host the festival warm-up. From 8 p.m. David Grabe and his Band will add a new sound to an absolute classic surf movie. Invitation only!
Thursday the 21st will be the official start of the Surffilmfestival with a world premiere of Luca Merli’s “Ritratti di Surf”, it will be screened at 8 pm.

The 70 minutes long film tells the story of surfer, shaper and artists that are connected to the Italian surf culture. Followed by “Learning to Breathe”, that gives an insight of surf legend Anthony Ruffo ́s life: 90 minutes of a balancing act between surfing, drugs and criminality.
On Friday, 22th of November, the “Surf & Travel” theme part starts at 8pm. “Good Morning Miyazaki” reveals the surf culture of people living in one of Japan ́s major cities, Miyazaki. Sky scrapers vs. California beach flair brought together in a 33 minutes long film.

Afterwards, a young Chilean boy takes you with him into his dream of being a surfer in “Tierras Lejanas”. The underdog “Wave Rider”, shows the story of an unknown surfer from the Fiji Islands who gets the chance to compete against the best surfers of the world, and will complete the “Surf & Travel” theme part.

At 10.30 pm the “Surf, Style & Shapes” part starts with a deep journey into the mind of a young surfer in “Remind Me To Forget”, which is full of haunting, joy, shame and death. The next film of this part is Jack Coleman’s “Secret Sound Underground”, which combines surf scenes and music on Super8 in a compelling and a paradox way. To top off the day, the documentary “Sacre Bleu” gives world’s best shapers, artists, glassers and photographers a chance to tell their story.

Saturday afternoon, the 23rd , we are starting off early with the kids movie “Surf’s Up”, in which the young penguin Cody wants to surf like his role model ‘Big Z’ and therefore takes part in a surf competition to prove his talent. Take your kids to the Studio Kino at 15:45 pm.
At night we will celebrate the less child-friendly Surffilmfestival final at Grüner Jäger. Everyone is invited to honor the Blue Tomato Best Shortie winners and afterwards celebrate with us the O`Neill Party until the bar is closed!

We are looking forward to a very special Surffilmfestival and especially to a perfect tour start in our hometown Hamburg!
