SURFER LOSES TEETH IN BIG WAVE ATTEMPT
Saturday, 24 February 2007

Surfer Paul Patterson's gung-ho attempt to ride a big wave ended with a meeting with a dental surgeon.

Patterson wiped out while riding a monster wave on a deep water reef called Cow Bombie near Margaret River in Western Australia in July.

The wave was estimated to have been between 40 and 42 feet high, but it was not the biggest surfed in Australia, as judged at a special Big Wave Award ceremony held in Australia this week.

That honour went to a wave on which surfer Damon Eastaugh took off a bit later on the same day.

Eastaugh's wave was estimated to have reached between 48 and 52 feet. Judging was based on photographs taken last year.

Eastaugh said that when he saw Patterson surfacing after his wipe out and spitting out his teeth, he knew it was going to be a "serious day".

In 2005 Patterson took part in the Red Bull Big Wave Africa contest at Dungeons, near Hout Bay. Here too, he wiped out spectacularly, but survived without injury.

Last July US surfer Greg Long rode a wave at Dungeons that was estimated to have been 70 feet or higher. Some commentators believed Long's ride might have been the biggest wave yet to have been surfed in the world.
