It's a bleak place- Philip Island, all full of saltbush, box thorn and ugly weekenders, but its also the home of one of the longest lived boardriders clubs in the country and next month, the Philip Island Boardriders Club celebrates its fiftieth anniversary, and members from all across the country are heading to the Island for the celebrations.

The first members were a hardy crew who launched into the waves at Woolamai and Cat Bay, Surfies Point, Flynn's Reef and eventually the Islands heaviest wave - Express Point.

Obviously the quality of waves like this did a lot to keep the club up and running when most other clubs were struggling to survive, but the notorious Island party circuit that helped launch Melbourne's legendary pop rockers Skyhooks must have helped, as did a series of pro events - The P.I.B.C. Pro contests and the Alan Oke Memorial events.

The club celebrates its fiftieth birthday this March 16 at its clubrooms. Its sure to be a big night, and with a reformed Skyhooks heading the bill, bookings are essential.
