Half Moon Bay California: For the first time since 2010, the Mavericks Invitational surf contest went down, and it was Peter Mel taking the win in small-for-Mavericks sized surf plagued by long lulls. But when the sets did roll through it was Santa Cruz's Peter Mel edging out Zach Wormhoudt, Greg Long, Alex Martins, Mark Healey and Shawn Dollar.
The finalists, in a Mavericks tradition, decided to split the prize monies equally.
Healey started a buzz by going left early on as the break came to life a bit more in the dropping tide. From then on it was the cast of international and local surfers putting on a splendid show, even without the likes of regulars Kelly Slater, Shane Dorian and Carlos Burle.
Organizers of the contest said that Kelly Slater, had to pull out of the event because of the rules of the Association of Surfing Professionals. Because Slater is ranked in the associationís top 34, he is not allowed to compete in events that are not sanctioned by the ASP. The Mavericks organizers did not apply for a waiver that would have allowed Slater to take part. Dorian and Burle withdrew from this yearís competition because of injuries.
