STAND UP PADDLING TO GET BIGGER AT THE AUSTRALIAN LONGBOARD OPEN
Wednesday, 23 January 2013

Event Director Sean McKeown has once again included Stand Up Paddling (SUPs) in the event program for the Australian Longboard Surfing Open 2013. The ever popular SUPs will include divisions for Women, Pros and Amateurs in both Surfing and Racing.

"SUPs are visually so exciting to watch and always attract good spectator numbers" commented McKeown.

SUP Surfing will be held in conjunction with other board surfing events in the main contest surfing  arena. With the banks looking good, last years winner Beau Nixon will have to go hard to defend his Australian Longboard Open title against runner up Jackson Close and Kingscliff local Justin Holland.

To make it even more spectator friendly this year the Battle of the Paddle races in all classes will be held over a two race series, a mid week race and a weekend race. 17yr old Lincoln Dews who has starred in the Oceans 38 Ironman series, will attempt to defend his BOP title from last year, but has to fit in the weekend racing with the State Lifesaving Titles.

"We have lengthened the BOP course to extend the competitors endurance with the race starting and finishing in the same place" said McKeown as he described the new SUP racing format. "The paddlers will travel out to sea and paddle parallel to the beach before returning to the start/finish via a course that has them in and out of the surf"

Paddlers in the Amateur and Novice SUP river race in Cudgen Creek on Sunday March 24th will all go into the draw for a brand new SUP board from Illusions
