Wednesday, 14 November 2012

Federal Minister for Sport Senator the Hon Kate Lundy received more than she bargained for when a tour of the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre (HPC) also included a surfing lesson. Senator Lundy toured the new facility at Casuarina in northern NSW for the first time today.

Funded by the Federal Government, the $4 million HPC is the world's first facility dedicated to the development of elite surfers and coaches and will ensure Australia maintains its place as a world leader in the sport.

The two-level centre of excellence, officially opened in June, boasts state of the art education facilities, equipment and accommodation and will be at the forefront of sports science and coaching development for surfing. Senator Lundy was put through her paces in the morning with a lesson from Surfing Australia HPC coach Josh Fuller and stood on her first wave.

"All credit to Josh, he is a fantastic coach and just made me feel very comfortable," Senator Lundy said. Senator Lundy was then given a tour of the HPC by Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark and Chairman Norm Innis.

"There is nothing like seeing something for real and this facility is amazing," Senator Lundy said. "The design is fantastic and fit for purpose and so open. I love it and it just has a great feel about it."

Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said: "We were delighted to be able to provide Sport Minister Hon Kate Lundy with a learn to surf lesson and then give her a tour of the brand new high performance training centre.

"I am sure after the surfing lesson Minister Lundy will be ready to go surfing again soon and enjoy our great sport. The morning with Minister Lundy was a great opportunity to demonstrate the absolute grassroots of the sport via the learn to surf lesson and then show the true elite level of our sport via a tour of the brand new elite training centre.

"We genuinely value our partnership with the Federal Government and to have the Sport Minister Kate Lundy as a guest for the morning to enjoy our sport was an absolute honour for our organisation."
