CHELSEA WILLIAMS TUNES-UP FOR CHINA AT THE DOMINELLI
Tuesday, 30 October 2012

Sydney, Sunday, Oct. 28. Chelsea Williams takes the longboard and grabs 4th in the Open Shortboard - won by Phillipa Anderson.

An increase in wave size, created powerful and sometimes-challenging conditions for the final day of the Dominelli Women’s Surf Classic at North Cronulla.

Coming hard out of the gates again today was Newcastle surfer Philippa Anderson, locking in a 16.5 for her 20 and under semi final. Philippa threw down a deadly combination of forehand hooks to lock in the highest heat score for the second day in a row.

Philippa’s hot streak continued into the open shortboard final where she took down a red-hot Skye Burgess with a combination of 12.16. Anabell Barratt finished in third and Chelsea Williams wound up in fourth position.

Coalcliff surfer Billie Melinz continued to build momentum throughout the 13 and under shortboard final. Billie managed to throw down a series of technical maneuvers to topple Alyssa Lock, Macy Callaghan and Alysse Cooper who all finished second, third and fourth respectively.

Despite coming fourth in the 13 and under division, Alysse Cooper found her feet in her 16 and under final and take the win from local surfer Paris Whittaker; 13 and under winner, Billie Melinz and Manly local Bella Wilton. Alysse - from Queenscliff - took to the powerful peaks with a solid repertoire of rail turns to earn the top spot on the dais.
In the 20 and under division, the lead bounced back and forth between Stephanie Single and Philippa Anderson over the course of the 20-minute final. Philippa looked certain to take the final out until the last five minutes when Stephanie managed to lock in a 6.17 and a 4.83. Anabell Barratt finished in second and Grace Spiers scored fourth spot.

Chelsea Williams got massive cheers from the crowd for her eclectic mix of nose-rides and carves in the open longboard final. Chelsea locked in a combination of 15.44 to land in first position ahead of Erin Dark and April Charles.

Local Cronulla surfer, Melissa Hatheier was the standout performer in the over-35 longboard division taking out fellow Sutherland Shire locals Josie Charles, Cheryl Steer and Katherine Vavahea.

Erin Dark was a convincing winner in the open stand up paddle-board final throwing down an impressive combination of lightening fast cutbacks and turns to take first place from the rest of the finalists.

Cheryl Peat was victorious in the over-35 shortboard division with a solid display of power and flow. Cheryl, from Seaford in South Australia, had been staying with local and runner-up Akemi O’Leary throughout the course of the event.

The “Carve of the Day” was awarded to Chelsea Williams for her performance across two different divisions: longboard and shortboard. For her efforts, Chelsea won a brand new pair of polarised Carve sunglasses.

Sam Dewhurst from Cronulla took out the Encouragement Award for her overall performance in the event. Sam scored herself a $150.00 training voucher for the Cronulla Surfing Academy.

Veronica Charles won the Local Spirit Award for her overall performance and help with the event. Veronica won a free six-month membership to Curves Gym in Cronulla.

The Dominelli Group continued to show their support of the event with a showcase of new vehicles from the likes Ford and Peugeot. Dominelli mascot, Ferdie Bird also partook in the event’s festival atmosphere by posing for photos with spectators and doing Zumba with the ladies from Curves, Cronulla.
