At the end of this month, Sunday 30th September, we are opening a very significant newly refurbished 1930s beach pavilion at North Beach in Wollongong, along with a huge upgrade to the surrounding area.
Council has spent a lot of money to both preserve and enhance this original Art Deco 'bathers pavilion' and inserted a state of the art restaurant in one end and new change facilities in the other. In addition our very popular cycleway and coastal walk has been enlarged and the entire precinct upgraded with new viewing areas, grand stair access from the road frontage, high quality furniture, etc. Our premier city beach is going to shine!
In association with this opening the Layback Longboarders are holding a longboard festival - not so much a comp as a celebration of Gong Surf Culture, with all the old crusty original Gong surfers invited for a friendly comp, demonstration heats, nude surfing, Le Mans start…you name it! We will make it up as we go along depending on who turns up. 7am for a 7.30 start. We have got interest from our original city legends like the Byrne brothers, Carabine, Skipp, and there are many more, hopefully we will get a good roll up.
There will also be all sorts of beach activity on the day from surf club march past to sand sculpting, beach volley ball, and a SHOW AND SHINE of old mals. - Andy Goldie
