LOGGER DIVISION LOOKING THE GOODS FOR THE EVANS HEAD MALIBU CLASSIC
Wednesday, 12 September 2012

The 22nd Evans Head Malibu Classic is on again over the October long weekend and is shaping up to the best yet. A new "Loggers" division is attracting some of the hottest longboarders in the country, including current Australian champion, and Evans Head local, Isaac Fields.

As always, there'll be a host of longboard age divisions including the progressive and attacking Open 9' through to Over 60's, plus the ever popular "Retro Single Fin" - a shortboard event using pre-1983 single fin boards. And, finally, we can't forget the Old Mal division riding beautifully preserved pre-1968 malibus.

The "Loggers" is an event where surfers ride modern versions of 1960s vintage boards. This new wave of stylish young surfers have sparked a revival of traditional boardriding involving long nose rides incorporated into a smooth, flowing style - usually climaxing with some hair-raising maneuvers in the the shorebreak. This new "movement" within the surfing community has created much excitement and is a great spectator event.

Monday is the pinnacle of the event with the finals, a beachside market and the "Fleas and Ants".  This is an event for the 6 to 12 year old kids and is one of the weekends highlights. It's not uncommon to see a few tears of joy flowing from the faces of proud family members on the beach.

120 longboarders from Victoria to the Sunshine Coast will be competing, including current and previous Australian and state champions. Not mention a number of hot up and coming juniors.

The three day event runs from Saturday 29th Sept through til Monday 1st October.  Competition will be held each day at Main Beach, Evans Head.
