PLB has now handed over 56 boards in 56 issues to Australian subscribers (a world record you'd reckon?), and for our 57th we'll be handing over a Jye Byrnes Foam & Fibre single-fin no less!
Aesthetically pleasing and way cool, coloured foam stringers were first around in the mid to late '60s but somewhere among the mayhem of the shortboard revolution just disappeared.
Second-generation surfer/shaper/board builder Jye Byrnes grew up in his old man Mick's Newcastle institution The Surf Factory and was well aware of foam stringers and always loved the look and feel of this old-school method of introducing colour without sprays. About five years ago he began experimenting with combinations of Australian red and whitewoods and high-density coloured foam stringers and has been happily fine-tuning ever since.
"This particular board is a 9'2" x 23" x 2 7/8" chisel-tail, and it's one of many longboards I do that channel the log theme but are more functional for the everyday surfer. You don't have to be a cool cat or poser, just a surfer wanting to glide in style," says Jye. "When designing rockers for my boards I consider the customer and the waves they are most likely to surf. Contours are blended from nose concave into a slightly rolled bottom, to finish with a small vee, and rails are soft all the way to a small tail edge. They are designed to perform in all conditions, from a point to your local beachbreak. The series of Foam & Fibre designs are functional boards that surf well or look just as good on the wall of the loungeroom."
To be in the running simply subscribe. The worst that can happen is a year's supply of PLB. www.pacificlongboarder.com
