Saturday, 14 July 2012
Competition commenced at Isos Reef, Cottesloe in pleasant 1/2 metre waves this morning. The 190 competitors from as far a field as Taiwan, Spain, Hawaii and New Zealand were greeted by the small but contestable waves but are looking forward to a promised increase in swell. Defending Women's champion Georgia Young used her local knowledge to the full extent as she took control of the opening heat in the ASP 3 star LQS division with her opening 4 point ride. Young then backed up with a 5.5 point to keep the other competitors chasing her before replacing the opening score with a 5.1 to finish with a 10.6 total to take the win. Lucy Small (QLD) started slowly before scoring a 5.5 and a 4.5 to finish 2nd while Taiwan's Wen Ling Chou scored the heats high score of 6.75 but could not find a decent back up wave and was eliminated. "There not many waves in my heat but it was so good to be able to share the waves with the other two girls," said Ling Chou after she was eliminated in today's heats. In heat two Hawaiian Miku Uemura had the days highest wave score of 8.5 executing turns and nose rides all the way to the beach. She then backed up with a 6.5 to also have the days highest heat total to take the heat win and progress to tomorrows semi final. NSW's Claire Norman shared the lead with Uemura for the first half of the heat with rides of 5 points and 4.5 to finish 2nd while former Australian Champion Rosie Locke (QLD) couldn't get the waves she needed to get the high scores and finished in 3rd. The final heat suffered from a lack of waves but still saw former ASP WQS competitor Wini Paul (NZ) catch 8 waves to dominate with a two wave total of 9.9 points. Fellow competitors Kirsty Webster (NSW) 9.5points and Nava Young (NSW) 7.35 were wave starved having to share 3 waves each. Webster advanced with Paul to tomorrows semis. The small conditions were ideally suited for the heats of the Old Mal (pre 1967 construction). A red hot field of 24 surfers has been whittled down to a 6 man final which includes multiple winners Jock Bahen and Rahn Goddard (both WA), Daniel Strazina, Joe Warwick (WA), Dane Wilson (Qld). A full program of surfing was completed in the small conditions today. Organisers are confident of a raising swell for tomorrow for the completion of the ASP 3 star LQS Men heats and semi finals and finals of all pro and amateur divisions.
